Warm Weather Hazards
As the weather gets warmer, keep your pets safe during the long summer days. Here are a few things to look out for.
- 1. Heat: Hot summer days increase chances of your pets overheating. Always leave windows open at home or in cars and make sure your pets have enough water.
- 2. Bugs and Preventative Care: In the hot weather, bugs want to come inside just as much as everyone else does too! Take care that your pet doesn’t get bitten by spiders hiding in dark corners. The hot weather is also a perfect time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes to bite you and your pets. Prevent serious infections like heartworm, tapeworms, and flea allergies by stocking up on preventative medicine over the summer.
- 3. Snakes: Unlike bugs, snakes love to sunbathe in the hot weather. Be aware that rattlesnakes are common in Contra Costa County. Always keep your dog on a leash when walking and keep a close eye on the road and the grasses and dirt nearby. For extra protection, consider getting a Rattlesnake Vaccine for your dog (contact us for more details).
- 4. Water: Everyone loves swimming! But wet ears make for a perfect environment for fungal and bacterial infections to grow. Clean out your pet’s ears with ear cleaning solution and cotton balls regularly after swimming or bathing to prevent ear infections.
If your pet has encountered any of the situations above, please contact HK Animal Hospital immediately.
